The domain of history was one of the areas which modification and updating was felt to be urgent, consequently, the history department of Tarbiat Modares University was established to carry out this purpose. Since its establishment based on the policies of Tarbiat Modares University, the department has been able to recruit renowned history professors from top national universities and it has succeeded to train a generation of graduates, most of whom are now working as influential faculty members of this field at universities across the country
Department of International Relations was established in 2006 but started its formal activities two years later by admitting M.A students in International Relations. Currently, the department offers M.A. and Ph.D. programs in International Relations. The Department has four full-time faculty members and four emeritus professors.
.The Department of Linguistics which was established in October, 1984 under the direction of Dr. Mohammad Dabir Moghaddam, began its academic activity with the admission of three graduate students. Up to 2000, the department was run by Dr. Seyed Ali Miremadi and Dr. Ali Afkhami. After that period, the management of the department was entrusted to the newly recruited faculty members of the Department of Linguistics.
This persistence on adhering to such superb standards has been the cause of numerous achievements for the department, achievements and honors which have never been regarded sufficient by its faculty members or students. Today, the council of the department follows a strategy of transforming each lesson to a theoretical school in the subject, though it is aware of the obstacles lying ahead. It also endeavors to establish new disciplines, centers and sub-disciplines and expand the scope of its activities further.
With the establishment of Tarbiat Modares University and its Faculty of Humanities in 1982, the university began to admit master students in Islamic philosophy and theology. By 1985, the Faculty of Humanities was fully operational, and shortly thereafter, the Islamic Philosophy and Theology department was created. When the organizational structure of the Faculty of Humanities was reformed in 1996, the name of the department was changed to Philosophy and Wisdom.

Student admission for Master?s programs in the physical education department of Tarbiat Modares University began in 1984, and 215 students have since graduated. Moreover, student admission for doctoral programs began in 1989 in sports management and exercise physiology, with 91 students graduating since. The department is located on the ground floor in the faculty of humanities. The Department of Psychology, one of the most productive and important post graduate Psychology departments in Islamic Republic of Iran Universities, is housed in the Faculty of Humanities. The Department is the first department in Iran, which offered Master programs in Clinical Psychology & General Psychology, and Ph.D. program in Psychology. In these programs, the central objective is to provide training and experiences necessary for post graduate students to become not only skilled and dedicated researchers, but also effective communicators of the knowledge and findings on which the science of psychology rests. The Ph.D. program is designed to prepare its graduates to function effectively in a range of academic and applied settings. The most focus of academic courses in Ph.D. training is on Neuropsychology, Cognitive Psychology and Clinical Psychology.
The Department of Quranic Sciences and Hadith of Tarbiat Modares University was founded in 1982. At the beginning, it was managed by Dr. Hojati and offered only master program in this field. In the academic year of 1988-9, the department managed to launch its Ph.D. program.

The Russian language department of Tarbiat Modares University was founded in 2000 and a year later in 2001 began its academic activities by admitting graduate students for the first time in Iran. Currently, this department offers graduate and doctoral programs in Russian-language Teaching. Since 2001, the Russian language Department has, on average, accepted at least 8 graduate students in its tuition-free program, all of whom have been encouraged to finish their theses on time. The department also admits 8 master students in its evening classes since 2008.
The department of Sociology is one of the first departments of Tarbiat Modares University which has been established since 1981. The formation of this department was an effort for developing the rationality of social knowledge in Iran. The major strategies of the department are institutionalizing Sociology in Iran and improving social life by conducting researches on socio-political issues and also attending in international academic relations.
It is worth noting that the selection and passing of these courses for graduate and Ph.D. students is completely optional. Needless to say, if these courses are selected, the student must comply with the educational regulations and pass all the stages until the end of the qualification exam.
