English Language Teaching (ELT) is an interdisciplinary field of study which focuses on English learning/teaching issues aiming to remove potential obstacles that learners/teachers may encounter. To this end, ELT enjoys relations with other scientific areas such as psychology, linguistics, sociology, anthropology and even politics.
Department of English Language Teaching was established at Tarbiat Modares University in 1982 and admitted the first group of enthusiastic students for Master's program in ELT. The Department started its Ph.D. program in ELT in 2006. The department has 298 alumni (268 MA graduates and 30 Ph.D. graduates). The major aims that Department of English Language Teaching at Tarbiat Modares University pursues include:

  • Critical evaluation of teacher education programs, language programs, current approaches to learning/teaching English, and language assessment methods.
  • Improvement of current methods of learning/teaching English from both linguistic and pragmatic perspectives.
  • Encouragement of research on present status of ELT both locally and globally from cultural, social, and political perspectives.
  • Boosting studies on ELT issues both locally and globally.

With regard to such goals, Department of English Language Teaching endeavors to provide the best academic facilities for the students at Master's and PhD programs. The present Head of the Department is Dr Gholam Reza Kiany, who has been running the Department for more than 8 years.
